Basic Buttercream Frosting

Nutritional Information

This versatile recipe can be flavored with several types of spices and extracts and works great on cookies and cakes.


  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 pound powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon desired flavoring
  • 4 tablespoons milk water or cream, may use up to 6


  • 1. Beat the butter and salt until the butter is light and fluffy. Slowly add in the powdered sugar. Add the desired flavoring and thin out with the milk or cream until desired consistency.
  • 2. Can be kept in refrigerator as long as it's tightly sealed. Note: For Thanksgiving class we used maple syrup and bourbon for the flavoring.

Variation: Vegetarian Class 03/30/15 and 03/31/15; add Malt Fudge Sauce for chocolate buttercream. Omit the liquid.
